Rep. Burlison Urges NCAA to Approve Missouri State Postseason Waiver

November 14, 2025

Missouri State University’s football program has already earned six wins in its first FBS season, meeting the standard for postseason eligibility. Rep. Eric Burlison is urging the NCAA to grant the Bears a waiver so these student-athletes can compete in a bowl game they have earned. Read the full letter below.

November 14, 2025

Dear President Baker and Members of the NCAA Board of Governors,

I write in strong support of Missouri State University’s request for a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) postseason waiver.

Missouri State University’s football program has earned six wins in its first FBS season, fulfilled all academic and competition standards, and proven it belongs at the FBS level. Under standard NCAA rules, this record would secure postseason eligibility.

The only obstacle to Missouri State University’s eligibility is a transition policy that no longer reflects the realities of modern college athletics. Today’s landscape of widespread realignment and growing competition makes this restriction outdated. Missouri State University has already satisfied every core FBS requirement, including scheduling, scholarships, and facilities. Rapid program growth is evident: Football revenue has doubled, and game attendance has risen nearly 40 percent compared to last year.

The NCAA has a clear precedent of allowing transitioning teams to participate in bowls when there are open slots. With 82 postseason slots available this season, Missouri State University deserves equal consideration. These student-athletes have earned their opportunity on the field and should not be sidelined by an outdated rule alone.

I respectfully urge the NCAA to approve Missouri State University’s petition and allow these athletes to compete in the postseason they have rightfully earned.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Eric Burlison

Member of Congress
