Rep. Burlison Issues Statement on Arrest of Nicolás Maduro and the Failure of Socialism

January 4, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Eric Burlison issued the following statement on the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and the failure of socialism in Venezuela:

"The arrest of Nicolás Maduro is the latest reminder that socialism inevitably fails. When the state takes control of production and distribution, freedom erodes and power concentrates.

Venezuela’s socialist descent collapsed the country and pushed mass migration, criminal activity, narcotics trafficking, and energy instability into the United States. Maduro’s removal was necessary to protect America’s interests and our people, and it gives Venezuela an opportunity to choose a different path.

Socialism remains attractive because it promises comfort without responsibility. Prosperity is not delivered by government. It is created by free people in open markets.

Compassion carries meaning only when it is voluntary. While America cannot and should not impose its system on other nations, we cannot tolerate the consequences of failed ideologies crossing into our own country.

America’s strength rests on individual liberty and personal responsibility. Those principles are worth defending."
